Who knew designing a trash can could be one of the most impactful projects a designer would have the privilege to create? It was a labor of love designing these BigBelly trash cans as part of the NYC DOT Rat Reduction Program. Each trash can not only serves its intended functional purpose but also serves as a way-finding system - there is a Chinatown landmarks map featured on each BigBelly with a "you are here" sticker to help help pedestrians know exactly where they are in the complex "5-Points" district of Manhattan. There are 118 BigBellys found throughout Chinatown and Little Italy. The design is inspired by the Chinese knot which is a symbol of love and prosperity.
